Long Road Trip & A Shy Volcano

Ξ March 9th, 2008 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Chat |

The Island of Hawaii is where there are active volcanoes. So today we decided to check that out and headed towards Kilauea Volcano, in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park! I took along my HD video camera and Nikon D70 photo camera with both my lenses because I was really excited to take photos and videos of flowing lava! How cool is that going to be huh?

We decided to take the South route to get across the island where the volcanoes parks are. We didn’t really know at the time that this way was about 3 times longer than going North to get across. So it took a whooping 6 hours to get to the volcanoes area! Talk about a long freaking drive! It didn’t look that far on the map, it really seemed like the same distance if we went North or South.

We stopped a few times along the way to eat and visit a few things. We went to a park called
Puuhonua o Honaunau National Historic Park and that is where we took these photos. It was really beautiful! What I really wanted to see was the “place of refuge” where you are forgiven your sins because we all know I have a lot of them to be forgiven! haha

Then we went to see the Punalu’u Black Sand Beach. The beach has black sand created by lava flowing into the ocean which explodes as it reaches the ocean and cools. It is very cool to see I have to say!

Then we made it to the volcanoes area and that is where we learned that we still had to drive 1 hour to get to the active volcano itself. And then once there we won’t see any lava… WTF? We came all this way and won’t see lava? We sure learned a lot on this trip… The lava is not always there, you can’t always see it. Damn! I wish I had known that! We were all so disappointed! We still drove to the volcano hoping that we would at least see something cool but once we got there it was almost dark outside and then they wouldn’t let us drive in, we would have had to walk 3 miles in and 3 miles back out. In the dark, no lights or anything. No thank you. So we turned around and left. We took the North road this time and a little over 2 hours later we were back at the hotel. Exhausted!

What a day! I am sure we are going to laugh about all of that in a few weeks! :)
