The Whole Storage Mess Explained…. And More!

Celt and I left 99% of our things in storage when we moved from Vancouver to New York. We knew that we were going to move a few times in the next couple years and didn’t want to spend a bunch of money on moving all of it every single time. Plus we were hoping to move back to the West coast so leaving our stuff in storage on that coast made sense to us at the time. We also didn’t have a place big enough for everything so we would have had to store our things where we lived anyway. Those are some of the reasons why we decided to leave our things in storage.
I just want to give you a little more details on the storage situation so that you understand our frustration with it. First we had no idea we would leave our things stored for 2.5 years! We thought 6 months at most. Then we learned that because of my immigration status to the USA I wasn’t allow back in Canada and therefore couldn’t move my things to the USA either. That lasted 1.5 year. When I got my green card last January we wanted to wait until after winter to move our things and were still hoping for that job on the west coast anyway. Last month we started looking for a house to buy here and almost moved our things but then Celt’s sister died and we had to cancel everything.
Canceling everything happened to be a good thing because on the flight back to Kentucky Celt met a friend of his and he told him about a job he could apply for on the west coast. A few days later Celt got an email about another job he was after in California. So within a week everything changed again. We are hoping to get one of those jobs, if we are lucky, and finally move to the west coast and get our stuff out of storage. That would be ideal and wonderful! If we don’t get the new job then we are staying here for a while and will shop for a house and then bring our stuff here in the spring.
The whole thing is totally frustrating! We have a storage in Vancouver for my things that cost $275 a month. We have one by Seattle for Celt’s stuff that cost $120 a month and we have more of my big furniture at my brother’s place in Quebec but that’s free cause he is using most of it in his house. If you do the math over 2.5 years that’s a lot of damn money and it is pissing us off to spend it on fucking storage!
We haven’t been to the storage since we left it there in June 2006. But today Celt had to go because he needed important papers for his future job interviews. So he flies to Vancouver, rents a car and drives to Washington state (about 30 minutes). The border is of course totally busy and he spends a few hours waiting. He gets to the storage and opens it and what does he find? We have been robbed! The thieves took ALL of his tools and anything else that was worth anything like the fine china. Thankfully the important papers were still there though.
Then he goes to my storage in Vancouver and we realize I gave him the wrong key. So he rents a cutter at Home Depot and buys a new lock and cuts the lock. My storage is more secure than his so a guard arrives and tells Celt how he doesn’t like what he is seeing. Ok it does look kind of bad and his name is not even on the lease. But he is in a rental car with a rental cutter so how much could he really steal with a car… The guard threatens to call the police before he finally makes a photocopy of the car rental papers and give him 10 minutes to get what he wants before he lets him go. I wanted a few clothes and a box of my sex video tapes and Celt took his guitar.
That’s a lot of stress for the day what do you think? Celt’s coming back tomorrow afternoon and I can’t wait to see him!
