Marathon Day!!

Ξ January 11th, 2009 | → 0 Comments | ∇ Chat |

Finally the day has arrived! We have been training for the past 6 months for today’s marathon.

We got up at 3:45AM, got dressed and got on the bus that would take us to the race start. We lined up for the bathroom just like a few other thousand people. There were over 10 000 entrants for the marathon this year so it was pretty crowded but very well organized. For once there was enough porter potty to get the job done! Most races I have been to never have enough of those!

We had to walk about a half a mile to the race start and I badly needed to pee again so I had to go in the bushes. I wasn’t alone though, it was almost like a pee party in the tall grass! LOL Soon after that I was at the race start. The gun went off along with fireworks and we started running. I lost Celt in the first two minutes because he is so much faster than me. Right from the start I knew I was running too fast but, just like the half marathon I did a few months ago, I figured why not push as much as I can and see what I can do today in this race.

My legs started to burn around the 6th mile. That’s not good, that meant I pushed too hard too soon. My thighs felt like lead which is from the build up of lactic acid. I had another 20 miles to go with those legs… Oops, it is going to be a long race! I was well in front of the 4:30 hour pacing guy until about mile 13 when he caught me. I ran along with that group for another 3 miles and then I had to drop back because that was too fast for me. I think in future races I might be able to keep up with that group maybe with a little more speed training.

From then on I had to walk at aid stations which come every miles. It was really tough to push myself to run some more afterward. I kept thinking that it is faster to run slow than to walk. I finally made it to the finish line within my goal time so I was really happy with that. But after finishing I had to take a moment to rest and shed a few tears for the pain I just endured pushing myself to the finish. I was so dead. Mentally and physically. I then regrouped and limped my way to Celt who also finished within his goal time. I got my Mickey Mouse medal and I am really proud of it! It is beautiful and has a real special place in my heart. I couldn’t be happier to have done this race with Celt, the man of my life :)

During a race you always have ups and downs. I usually have more downs then ups though. I don’t really like running and I am not really good at it but I like the “idea” of being a runner and doing marathons. What is weird though is while I do races I don’t enjoy it at all and keep wondering why the hell am I putting myself through this. Then a few days later I am really happy and proud that I did it and already start thinking about what race I should do next. That is kind of a weird thing but that works for me I guess and if that keeps me running well so be it!

So after getting back to our room and showering we went to Epcot to get a nice big meal in England!

Here is a picture of Celt and I after finishing the marathon!
